Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, June 1, met Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi and held wide-ranging talks focused on boosting bilateral cooperation in trade, defence and border security.

Aung Hlaing’s five-day visit to India comes less than two months after he became the president of Myanmar after high-stakes parliament elections. The polls in the Southeast Asian country were held in December and January after years of protests against the ruling military-junta that seized power in a coup on February 1, 2021 and had overthrown the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Anchored in the enduring historical and people-to-people relationship, both sides agreed to advance 🇮🇳-🇲🇲 partnership for peace, progress and prosperity and to further collaborate in areas of trade, investment, connectivity, development partnership, capacity building, security and border management.”

He stated that Prime Minister Modi conveyed to President Aung Hlaing that India remains Myanmar’s “trusted neighbour, a reliable partner and steadfast first responder in times of crisis, in line with India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR policies.”

“PM reaffirmed India’s readiness to support peace and dialogue in Myanmar, including by sharing federal governance and economic growth experiences,” he added.

Being one of India’s strategic neighbours, Myanmar shares a 1,640-km-long border with several northeastern states, including Nagaland and Manipur.

Aung Hlaing is scheduled to visit Mumbai on June 2 for business and industry interactions.
